Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) from the syllabus:

We will work together to

  • Engage in critical inquiry and reflection: Discover and refine critical questions or problems and investigate them from multiple perspectives;
  • Develop information literacy: Access, evaluate, and integrate relevant information from a variety of sources in an ethical manner; and
  • Communicate in rhetorically effective ways: Craft and revise compositions marked by choices in focus, structure, and style appropriate for rhetorical purposes, audience expectations, and disciplinary conventions.

Most common shared learning goals from our initial self-assessments:

  • Learn how to take care of ourselves so that we can do our best, work steadily, and be fully present to what we’re doing & learning in class
  • Learn to enjoy, care about, take our time with, and be passionate about the writing we’re working on
  • Develop our own voice and style, apart from school formulas & genres
  • Develop confidence with our writing, improving and refining (and becoming comfortable with) our own processes of generating ideas & drafts, giving and receiving feedback, and revising and polishing work that may never be “perfect”
  • Develop writing skills and an understanding of different genres that we can apply to other courses and situations beyond school
